"If you're not worried about peak oil, you will be after watching Oil Crash,
Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack's meticulously researched look at the
world's dwindling petroleum supply."
. . .in 2005, Stephen Gaghan made Syriana, a tense, well-researched,
politically charged drama about the oil industry - which made plenty of
sense to those steeped in world politics and economics, without
outwardly offending anybody. Now in 2006 two directors in Switzerland
make A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash, a painstaking documentary
about the frighteningly central role of oil in our lives.
Boy, are we in trouble. As I said above, the best movie I saw at SXSW
this year was "Oil Crash," a terrific work of investigative journalism-as
film that will scare the living crap out of you. Sure, you've read a little
about the "peak oil" hypothesis, you disapprove in some theoretical way
of the planet's massive (and rapidly worsening) fossil-fuel addiction,
you're in favor of alternative energy sources and all that. Well, Basil
Gelpke and Ray McCormack's film paints a vastly grimmer picture than
that, and here's the thing. Their sources are not eco-freaks from
Vermont or Berkeley in Peruvian clothing, but scientists, financial insiders
and retired oil executives, many of them bedrock conservatives. Their
message: The era of oil is nearly at an end, and the social and economic
consequences are barely imaginable.
A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash offered those new to peak oil an
informative and engaging introduction to the topic. At the same time, the
movie remained poignant to, and well-accepted by, those informed on
the topic. A blend of interviews and relevant cinematic clips provided the
information content of the movie, with cartoon and 1950s-style American
public information video interjections creating entertaining quips, easing
its heavy message.
